[ARCHIVED] Douglas County Animals Services Issues Rabies Alert

RABIES VACCINE

Douglas County Animal Services confirms that on June 24, 2022, Georgia Department of Public Health notified them that positive results of rabies came back from a fox that was submitted for testing.   Animal Control responded to a call for service on June 22nd around Mann Road & Richardson Rd in the Winston area of Douglas County, Ga. where multiple citizens were chased by an aggressive fox.

The fox attacked a family pet according to its owner but did not attack any of the citizens.   Upon arrival, Animal Control Officers found the fox deceased in a back yard.  Results received today indicate the fox was positive for the rabies virus. The family pet that was attacked, had been vaccinated against rabies annually but will be bolstered and placed on quarantine for the next 45 days.

Douglas County Animal Services wants to remind the public not to touch or interfere with any wildlife, regardless of if they appear to be healthy or sick.    Family pets should be vaccinated annually, against the threat of rabies.

If you see a rabies vector animal, such as a fox, raccoon, bat, or coyote, acting strangely or aggressive, contact Animal Control immediately at 770-942-5961.
