The $127.2 million dollar budget, as proposed by County Administration, passed with a unanimous vote during the BOC’s legislative meeting on Tuesday, January 9, 2024. "Thanks to the administration, my fellow Commissioners, and our able workforce of more than 1,200 who continue to work hard and make sure that Douglas Delivers! for our residents, business and property owners, this Commission was able to pass the coming year's budget without significant program or service cuts, while slightly reducing the millage rate, and largely due to growth in our tax digest," said Douglas County Commission Chair, Phil Miller.
In alignment with the county’s strategic priorities, a third of the budget-$41 million dollars- has been allocated to public safety, which includes pay increases for the Sheriff’s Department- bumping the starting pay for deputies to the second highest in the metro region.
In addition to public safety, the budget includes a $20 million dollar allocation to the judicial system and another $20 million dollars for infrastructure, economic development, and quality of life resources in the areas of parks and recreation, libraries, and senior services.
"This budget is a testament to our unwavering commitment to fiscal responsibility and community well-being,” said Interim County Administrator David Corbin. “Through thoughtful collaboration with our dedicated Board of Commissioners, elected officials, county departments, and engaged residents, we have crafted a financial plan that addresses the evolving needs of our community guided by citizen priorities. I extend my gratitude to everyone involved in this process for their hard work and dedication to joining us in moving Douglas County Forward,” said Corbin.
The 2024 budget also incorporates 2-7% employee pay increases, which took effect on September 30, 2023.
