Douglas County Board of Commissioners Consider Holding Steady on
Current Millage Rate
Public Hearings Scheduled to Discuss Impact on Property Taxes
(Douglasville, Ga.) The Douglas County Board of Commissioners is considering a proposal to maintain the current millage rate of 12.313 mills, following a 2023 rollback from 12. 563 mills. The public is invited to a series of public hearings to discuss the potential impact on property taxes due to rising values.
When the total digest of taxable properties is prepared, Georgia law requires that a rollback millage rate be computed to produce the same total revenue on the current year’s digest that last year’s millage rate would have produced had no reassessments occurred.
Though the BOC is not proposing a plan to raise property taxes, maintaining the current millage rate equates to an increase in property taxes of 1.92 percent due to increased property values.
For a home with a fair market value of $250,000, the potential increase in the property owner’s tax bill without a homestead exemption is approximately $23. For those with the exemption, the potential increase is $22.
Citizens can offer their input on the proposed millage rate during the upcoming public hearings scheduled for the following dates and times at the Douglas County Courthouse:
- Tuesday, August 20, 2024 10AM and 6PM
- Tuesday, August 27, 2024 10AM
The Board of Commissioners will formally adopt the millage rate on Tuesday August 27, 2024, following the public hearing.
